whats the thermostat do to the radiator?

i've always had overheating problems with my 1995 4 clylinder toyota camry since i bought an after market radiator 2 years ago.

My original camrys radiator had a crack on the top > replaced w/ after market a lot skinner > after 1

sounds to me like you need a bigger radiator if the radiator they gave you is skinnier than the Original radiator, the more cores the radiator has the cooler your car will run, I really think buying a new thermostat is a waste of time and money.
